Fitting out collective shelters | Ukraine
Financial support from Fons Català has enabled the ASB Ukraine team to provide central collective shelters for internally displaced persons in western Ukraine, thereby significantly improving conditions for internally displaced persons in their temporary accommodation.
The project
The Russian invasion of 24 February 2022 has driven many Ukrainians to leave their homeland due to active fighting. In order to get to safety, people from the east in particular fled to parts of the relatively safe western Ukraine. These people had to leave their homes in a hurry and could only take with them what was necessary. Most IDPs stay in host communities and live off their savings. Only about 5% are housed in collective shelters on a temporary basis or for a longer period of time. These collective shelters were built to be temporary structures by the host communities, for example in vacant municipal buildings, such as schools or sports halls.
How the ASB is helping in Ukraine
Fitting out collective shelters
The aim of the project is to fit out the collective shelters in western Ukraine and thereby improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons. For example, washing machines have been purchased and installed in several shelters, improving hygiene conditions in the shelters. Refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, hot plates, boilers and kettles were also purchased.
