Helping people in Niger | ASB Foreign Aid
Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world. In recent years, the landlocked West African state has increasingly been grappling with political unrest, the effects of climate change and refugee crises. The ASB has been active in Niger since 2005. The country office in the capital Niamey and the regional office in the city of Tahoua employ two international and more than 30 local members of staff. The ASB implements various projects in Niger. They focus on education, economic development, food security, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), social cohesion, livelihoods and support for adaptation to climate change.

Strengthening local capacities for universal and climate-sensitive WASH (Water, Sanitary and Hygiene)
The project is being implemented by ASB Niger and its partner organisation Adkoul in the city of Tahoua and the department of Tillia in north-western Niger, with 35,320 direct beneficiaries. The project has a clearly defined overall objective. It aims to enable vulnerable communities to have WASH capacities that take into account the impact of climate and environmental risks. Furthermore, communities must be able to prepare for extreme weather events, anticipate them and proactively provide humanitarian aid.

Water for cohesion
Thanks to the assistance of the ASB, a deep well was created in the Tahoua region, which supplies the inhabitants with clean drinking water. This permanent availability of water reduces tensions between communities which exist due to the limited access to water up until now. Long distances to the water station are now shorter and safer for internally displaced persons, refugees and host communities. Likewise, clean drinking water can reduce diseases like cholera.
