Helping people in Indonesia | ASB Foreign Aid

The ASB has been active in Indonesia since 2006. Projects are implemented through the Regional Office for Indonesia and the Philippines, based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and a wide network of local and national partner organisations. In particular, the focus is on organisations representing the interests and needs of the elderly and people with disabilities. The aim is to better prepare communities for natural disasters and climate change. Risk groups such as the elderly and people with disabilities are actively involved in the design and implementation of the programme by the ASB and take on leadership responsibilities.

Seger Waras: strengthening local climate-sensitive and universal WASH capacities (water, sanitation and hygiene)

The Seger Waras programme is carried out in four villages: The villages of Ngadiharjo and Giri Tengah in Magelang and Girisuko and Ngalang in Gunungkidul. Accessible WASH services, safe latrines and adequate sanitation facilities must be provided in both areas. Some communities are affected by drought, while others are vulnerable to flooding and landslides, especially during the rainy season.

*Seger Waras is an acronym developed by ASB Indonesia to simplify the name of the entire WASH programme.

Adapting to climate change

The project aims to implement measures in two communities which are particularly vulnerable to climate change in order to meet the challenges of the climate crisis. The population and decision-makers are informed about the importance of resource conservation and the risks of climate change. The ASB also creates sustainable livelihoods, especially in ecotourism. Among other things, sustainable souvenirs or snacks are produced, which are then sold to tourists.

Crisis and economic relief

The project is intended to strengthen companies set up by local communities to create social and economic benefits for them (commonly known as BUMDes). The BUMDes are working closely with local authorities (3 project municipalities and the South Lampung district) and local businesses. The target group of the project is mainly women and people with disabilities. They receive training on disaster risk reduction and on how to run small businesses. The ASB is working to ensure that women and people with disabilities are also more involved in political life. In addition, women and people with disabilities who run their own business are supported when it comes to branding, marketing and in production and packaging.

Focusing on people with disabilities

In this project, the ASB promotes measures to minimise the impact of disasters on the population in eight countries. It identifies, assesses and reduces risks before disaster strikes, establishes evacuation plans and emergency precaution planning. People with disabilities are actively involved in the implementation of the measures. They are prepared for disasters such as floods or earthquakes by way of training courses and are taken on board in political decision-making. The ASB is responsible for the implementation of the project in Indonesia and Central America.
