Helping people in Bangladesh | ASB Foreign Aid

There is practically no other country which has been hit as hard by the effects of climate change as Bangladesh. This is mainly due to its location on the Bay of Bengal and the many waterways of the Ganges Delta. Therefore, together with our local partner organisation, the Centre for Disability in Development (CDD), the ASB is helping to protect people from the effects of climate change. In this context, the ASB is especially committed to actively integrating particularly vulnerable population groups such as the elderly and people with disabilities in disaster risk reduction. The ASB also supports its partner organisation with humanitarian aid: during the Rohingya crisis, the ASB supported health and rehabilitation measures in refugee camps, and when extreme weather events occur, such as cyclones or floods, the ASB helps local partners to take protective measures at an early stage

Strengthening local capacities for universal and climate-sensitive WASH (Water, Sanitary and Hygiene)

The ECT-WASH project will be implemented in all nine districts of the South Khali Union in Sarankhola Upazila, Bagerhat District, Bangladesh, from November 2023 to October 2026. This area is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as tropical cyclones and storm surges, as well as the effects of climate change, including high salinity and drought. The majority of the population is marginalised and lacks the knowledge and resources to adequately prepare for these disasters.

Strengthening resilience in South and Southeast Asia

The ASB is working in 28 municipalities that are hit particularly hard by natural disasters and climate change on providing training to women, people with disabilities and representatives of local administration in disaster risk reduction to enable them to identify risks in good time and take preventive measures. The ASB also builds and installs rainwater reservoirs or solar panels to conserve water and make the best use of energy. The ASB helps women and people with disabilities to adapt their livelihoods to the changed climate conditions by providing suitable livestock animals such as goats or chickens and suitable seeds. These are mainly seeds for types of rice that are better suited to cope with the extreme heat and high salt content of the water.

Improved access to health and rehabilitation services

The ASB is working in Bangladesh to facilitate access to healthcare for the elderly, people with disabilities and people living in poverty.
